Torsten Malm: Color Realism Tattoo Artist & Mentor

Torsten Malm is a Finnish-born color realism tattoo artist and tattoo mentor based in Tallinn, Estonia. He holds a PhD in mathematics from Aalto University — where he also taught — and captained Finland's national American-football team. Since his first tattoo in 2013 he has won 30+ awards worldwide and judged major international tattoo competitions, including in Beijing. Today he leads the Tattoo Masterclass — the biggest online tattoo course with the most award-winning students ever created: 1,200+ members, the largest tattoo-education community on Skool.

The First Tattoo He Ever Did, He Did for Free

It was 2013, in Helsinki. His hands, he admits, "were shaking more than ever." He had never been an artist. His entire artistic output to that point: stick figures in the margins of his mathematics books.

Torsten Erik Malm, born in Helsinki in 1985, was the kind of gifted that shows up early. He earned a PhD in mathematics at Aalto University and taught there. On the field, he captained Finland's national American-football team at the 2010 European Championship, won three Finnish championships with the Helsinki Roosters (2004, 2012, 2013), made the league's All-Star team three times — and his ten-touchdown 2012 season still sits in the club record book.

Then, at the peak, his body gave out. Injury after injury, until the sport was gone.

Kätlin — his girlfriend then, his wife now — was taking drawing classes. She pulled him in. Around his fifteenth drawing, a pencil sketch of a wristwatch he still keeps, something clicked that years of equations never had. He drew until 3 a.m., set the alarm for 6, and drew again before work. Everyone told him to stay in academia. One person didn't. Kätlin.

Here's the part most bios would bury: his early work was rough. Scarring. Blowouts. Stencils wiping off mid-session. He wasn't a natural — and he wasn't "self-taught" either. Finnish artist Jari Kajaste took him under his wing, because 90% of what he found online was nonsense.

What he did have, nobody else in tattooing had: he didn't leave the mathematics behind. He aimed it at skin. One variable at a time — needle depth, pigment load, healed result — isolated, tested, mastered, combined. Hygiene before art. Fake skin before real skin. Fundamentals before flourish.

Four years after the shaking hands, he walked out of a French festival with a trophy from every category he entered.

Not late-blooming talent. A system — and Torsten was its first student. He was 27 when he started, from a math department, and had barely drawn a thing. Remember that the next time someone says tattoo artists are born, not built.

The piece 15+ million people saw in its first two weeks. April 2019, Munich: four artists — Torsten, Kätlin Malm, Moriel Seror and Adrian Ciercoles — spent about 30 hours on a photorealistic clown across a client's whole back. When he flexes, it moves. 15 million+ views. 240,000 shares. Covered by The Sun, UNILAD, LADbible and The New York Times. French national television had already put him on air live on a convention floor — minutes before another prize.

The museum. For nearly a year — March 2023 to January 2024 — his and Kätlin's work was part of Õige keha, vale keha? (Right Body, Wrong Body?) at the Estonian National Museum in Tartu. Tattoo artists don't usually hang in national museums.

The industry. INTENZE lists him on its official Pro Team roster. Spanish magazine TattooLove called him one of the international leaders in colour realism (2025). He turns down more sponsorship offers than he accepts.

Almost nothing on this page was built alone.

Kätlin Malm pulled Torsten into drawing before either of them owned a machine. A year into his own career, he returned the favor and put a machine in her hands — and she became a color realism artist in her own right. On one day in 2017, at the same festival in Nice, they each collected a certificate — same category, two Malms.

Since then, nearly everything carrying the family name is signed twice. Studio Malm in Tallinn. Tattoo Armour, the aftercare brand co-founded in 2019, now sold internationally. The Kajaste × Malm AURORA, his signature machine, built with the Finnish workshop of Jari Kajaste — his first mentor now builds his machine. MUO, the wearable-art label the two own outright. And inside the Tattoo Masterclass, Kätlin teaches her own color realism seminars and fronts live critiques.

Torsten taught university mathematics before he ever taught tattooing. Teaching isn't a pivot — it's the through-line. So when he examined tattoo education, he graded it like a professor. His verdict:

The Studio in Tallinn, Estonia

Studio Malm sits in Tallinn's Rotermann quarter — the studio Torsten built with Kätlin, and the room where everything on this page happens: the client work, the lesson filming, the live calls. Students learn from the exact place the work happens. Collectors fly in from Brazil, Canada and China — some travel 12 hours, sit for the tattoo, and fly home without seeing the city. Estonia's national broadcaster has featured the studio; Sony Music once threw an Ozzy Osbourne album-release party in it.

Tallinn is not one of the world's tattoo capitals. That's the point. Nobody flies to Estonia for a scene — they fly in for the work. The Masterclass runs on the same filter: 1,200+ artists didn't join an address. They joined a standard.
